Learning Development and SEN

"In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity." (Albert Einstein)

Up to and including Year 9

Learning Support at Mount Kelly begins with the baseline assessments of pupils when they arrive. This data, along with information from previous schools, further enables us to identify pupils who may require additional support. Support for pupils up to and including Year 9 will be a combination of curriculum support and taught lessons, and is generally provided in small groups, taking the place of one modern foreign language. In the summer term of Y9 pupils with additional needs are formally assessed for Exam Access Arrangements, either by our own Specialist Assessor, or by an independent Educational Psychologist.

GCSE

Those pupils who have received Learning Support in Year 9 will be encouraged to choose it as an option in Year 10, in place of an additional GCSE subject. The focus of the Year 10 and Y11 Learning Support is curricular support for the GCSE courses, looking at identified areas of the curriculum, involving close liaison between the LS department and subject staff. Learning Support lessons will also focus on the development of study skills, organisation and the building of confidence and self-esteem.

A Level

Individual Learning Support lessons for pupils in the sixth form can be arranged if a need is identified, or if concerns over progress arise.  Please contact the Director of Learning Support, Miss Victoria Haye, if this is something you would like to discuss.
