Prep Sport

Our Sporting Ethos

At Mount Kelly we aim to provide a sporting environment in which every pupil has the opportunity to achieve his or her potential. We want each child to find a sport they enjoy enough to pursue after leaving school. We strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, and cater for everyone – regardless of ability – by providing first class coaching, facilities and opportunities to train and compete.

At the heart of our framework are our core values of Respect, Commitment, Teamwork, Sportsmanship and Humility and we pride ourselves on the ability to learn from every sporting experience.

Our principal sports are:

Michaelmas Term: Boys Rugby / Girls Hockey

Lent Term: Boys Hockey / Girls Netball

Summer Term: Boys and Girls Cricket,Tennis & Athletics

In addition to these sports, pupils are offered a fantastic range of opportunities throughout our games programme. They receive three sessions per week, making use of the outstanding facilities that we have here at Mount Kelly.

Sport plays a significant role at Mount Kelly, creating opportunities for every child to enjoy the benefits of sport and an active, healthy lifestyle. The Prep enjoys a high level of sporting success, with some pupils going on to gain National and International honours.

Whilst developing children’s performance is a key focus, each child is taught the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship and fair-play. Regular fixtures are organised with a variety of schools and are followed by a post-match tea, where children from both teams eat together to encourage a mature attitude to winning and losing, and proper sporting companionship.

The School has first-class facilities, including three all-weather pitches, eight grass pitches for rugby, football, cricket and rounders, a 700m square metre indoor sports hall with two squash courts, indoor training centre and mezzanine viewing gallery, indoor and outdoor cricket nets, a cross-country course, two netball courts, a nine-hole golf course, 50m and 25m indoor pools and a heated outdoor swimming pool. The indoor sports facilities enable all-weather participation in hockey, tennis, squash, basketball, volleyball, netball, football and climbing.

Mount Kelly is located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, which provides an excellent facility for our keen cross-country runners.

Director of Sport: Bobby Skelton

Bobby Skelton joins Mount Kelly, from Sussex, as the new Director of Sport for the School In September 2018. He comes with an impressive track record of involvement in independent school sport; and success in both playing and coaching sport at a high level.

In his youth, Bobby was awarded a rugby scholarship to university. He has a proven track record of playing semi-professional rugby at academy, regional and national league level for various clubs, ultimately winning the National County Cup in 2002 at Twickenham with Hampshire. Bobby studied Sport Science at Chichester, and subsequently completed his PGCE in secondary Physical Education. After retiring from playing, he went on to coach in the Sussex set up with the U20’s age group before moving to Brighton Blues Men’s 1st XV – where he was instrumental in their winning of the National Intermediate Cup at Twickenham in 2013.

In his teaching career, Bobby has been Director of Sport of various independent schools, including a leading prep school in the South East. This experience has given him a clear understanding of developing grassroots sports while maintaining the developmental transitions all the way through a pupil's sporting career. He has overseen National title runs at school level in both girls and boys sport and overseen the introduction of numerous players into elite pathways and representative sport at regional and national level. Bobby's focus remains on creating varied sports programmes in which pupils of all abilities can access competitive sport.
