BTEC Nationals are stand-alone qualifications designed to provide you with specialist knowledge and accreditation in specific sectors. The two year BTEC qualifications deepens and extends the subject of sport. Designed for pupils wanting to enter a particular sports specialist area of work it is equivalent to three GCE A Levels, which UCAS recognises with tariff points.

The BTEC Sport course is continually assessed through one formal examination, controlled assessment, written reports, podcasts, PowerPoint presentations, video blogs or practically based activities.  Each piece of work is assessed as a pass, merit or distinction level, giving each individual unit the same three potential outcomes.

At Mount Kelly, the BTEC Sport courses helps potential elite and non-elite athletes learn about key areas of sport such as nutrition, psychology and the acquisition of skill needed to improve their level of performance as either an athlete or coach.

Mandatory units of study include

  • Anatomy
  • physiology
  • Fitness training
  • Programming for health and sports leadership

There are opportunities for work experience within the sports industries within one unit, while the sports leadership unit enables candidates to development their understanding, organisation and delivery of sporting events. Candidates may also have the opportunity to increase their sporting experiences by adding the Sports Leaders Level 2 or Level 3 awards and in addition, gain accreditation as a Level 1 Governing Body Coach.

The course is intentionally as active as possible, and as relevant as it can be to the specialist areas of each pupil. Results achieved at the end of the course are well above the national average for percentage of distinctions achieved, with the majority of pupils achieving merit or above.

Pupils find a great deal of success when they have completed the course, past pupils having gone on to study at some of our top universities such as Exeter, Durham, Cardiff, Bath and Birmingham.  Others have gone on to find great success in their chosen sports career, coaching careers and the military.
