Surviving the Holocaust

Posted: 15th June 2017

On 13th June pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 were privileged to hear testimony from Holocaust survivor, William Bergman, as part of a visit organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET).

William’s testimony included his recollections of Kristalnacht, his father and grandfather being temporarily taken to Dachau Concentration Camp before he and his parents managed to escape to England five weeks before war broke out. IN England, they spent some time interned as ‘stateless enemy aliens’ in the Isle of Man and after the war, discovered that his grandparents and extended family had been gassed in Treblinka.

The visit is part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s extensive all year round Outreach Programme, which is available to schools across the UK.

Head Master, Mark Semmence, said: “It was a privilege for us to welcome William Bergman to our school and his testimony will remain a powerful reminder of the horrors so many experienced. We are grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for co-ordinating the visit and we hope that by hearing William’s testimony, it will encourage our pupils to learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and make a positive difference in their own lives.”
