Mount Kelly Triumphant at Tavistock Speaks

Posted: 22nd January 2015

Five Mount Kelly debating teams consisting of three pupils each attended the Rotary sponsored Tavistock Speaks Debating Competition this week. Pupils could select their own topics which ranged from Kindles v Books and Should Homework be Banned?!

The Mount Kelly teams performed extremely well, overcoming their concerns about public speaking, and successfully engaging audiences with their case presentations and fielding questions sensitively and succinctly. English teacher and coach Mrs Wilson said of the teams: “I was thrilled with how well every member of the squad performed – and that everyone seemed to enjoy the experience far more than we could have expected. Competency in public performance is an important life skill we are grateful to the Rotary Club for providing this opportunity – and to our pupils for taking advantage of it.”

The Mount Kelly winners Emma Bowles, Imogen Shere and Lamorna Wood will go on to compete in the county wide competition on 11th February (along with the joint winning trio from Gulworthy School).
