On Friday 13th March, Mount Kelly hosted some 140 pupils from eight local primary schools for the Newton Cup, a cross country event for children aged 8-11. The visiting Primary Schools were St Andrews C of E Primary School (Buckland Monachorum), Trekenner Primary, Shaugh Prior and Cornwood Primary Schools, Hyde Park Primary, Whitchurch Primary, Horrabridge Primary, Tavistock Primary and Lew Trenchard Primary.
The afternoon consisted of 4 races in total: boys and girls in the U9 category, and boys and girls in the U11 category. Each team consisted of at least eight runners, with the first four to finish determining the team score overall. The mile long cross country route at Mount Kelly is a demanding one, with a number of hard hills and inclines, but all runners tackled the course with determination and enthusiasm.
After the races were complete, all spectators and runners were able to warm up and dry off with a cup of tea and cake in the main hall before prize giving. Medals were presented to the individuals and, if the Mount Kelly scores counted on the day, Mount Kelly would have won 7 medals, two team events and the Newton Cup. Overall winners were Mount Kelly but as host school our scores do not count. Congratulations to all our runners, and in particular:
2nd place Noah Bridle Siver
3rd place Danny Bache Bronze
5th place Thomas Roddy
1st place Artemis Morgan (Gold medal)
2nd place Georgia Burton (Silver medal)
3rd place Daisy Heal (Bronze medal)
4th place Laria Campbell
1st place James Lamb (Gold medal)
3rd place Zara Rizk (Bronze medal)
The visiting team scores were as follows:
U9 Boys: Whitchurch Primary School
U9 Girls: St Andrew’s C of E Primary School
U11 Boys: St Andrew’s C of E Primary School

Many congratulations to St Andrew’s CofE Primary School who won overall and who were the proud recipients of The Newton Cup.
