A blue plaque commemorating Admiral Benedictus Kelly has recently been unveiled outside his home, Saltford House, near Bath. Many are unaware of Admiral Kelly's extraordinary achievements during his lifetime; as a naval officer, he was part of HMS Pheasant's anti-slavery patrols off the coast of Africa from 1818 to 1822 and at the end of his active service he freed 350 slaves. It was his legacy in 1867 that bequeathed the sum of some £130,000 for the foundation of Kelly College, which opened its doors in October 1877 with just 12 boys on the register.
