Year 10 Art pupils began their GCSE course with a visit to St Ives last week.

Time spent in the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden gave pupils the opportunity to study first-hand the wide range of sculptures the artist created in bronze, stone and wood, and see the studio as she had left it before she died.

Moving on to the Tate St Ives, pupils were encouraged to find examples of the artists they have been studying in class: Alfred Wallis, Peter Lanyon, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Terry Frost. They were also treated to the visiting exhibition by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. Her wonderfully rhythmic and colourful work will be influential in future art projects.

Plenty of sketches were made and photographs taken, and their hard work was rewarded with ice-cream and time to explore the town.
