Conway Sea Training Award

Posted: 6th September 2019

Five Mount Kelly pupils were recently awarded a Conway Sea Training Award, sponsored by the Conway Merchant Navy Trust, to join a crew on board a 72ft Challenger Yacht and cross the Bay of Biscay from Portsmouth to La Coruña in Spain.

Their voyage covered a distance of 1153 nautical miles during 11 days at sea, and enabled the pupils to gain their RYA Competent Crew qualification, improve their sailing knowledge, make new friends, and learn a range of new skills, including washing, cleaning and cooking on a yacht as it pitched through 20 foot waves and gale force winds.

The crew learnt skills such as helming, rigging, mooring, using flares, and others including teamwork and working under pressure. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic opportunity, and are truly grateful to the Conway Merchant Navy Trust for funding this once in a lifetime adventure.
