Mount Kelly Cadets Visit HMS Raleigh

Posted: 9th November 2018

On Tuesday 6 November, Mount Kelly’s Royal Navy and Army cadets braved a rainy and windswept evening to visit HMS Raleigh. After staying overnight they were able to experience the Royal Navy’s Damage Repair Instructional Unit (DRIU).  Known as HMS Havoc, the DRIU is a simulator of a sinking ship.  The cadets’ challenge was to prevent their ship from sinking, and through a combination of teamwork, wooden wedges and some controlled aggression on the hammers, both teams were able to plug the leaks and save the ship! It was an insightful and useful lesson in teamwork and staying calm in even the most hectic of situations.

The afternoon followed with an introduction to Royal Navy firefighting, including some practice outside. The DRIU is an exceptional facility and we are very fortunate to have been offered a space on it.  All the cadets thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it is an experience that they will not forget in a hurry.
