Year 13 Biomedical Society

Posted: 7th November 2025

On Monday, the Biomedical Society were lucky enough to welcome Dr Brendon Neumann, who gave an engaging and insightful talk about his career in biological pest control.
Dr Neumann shared his academic journey through university, which led to his work developing cutting-edge biological solutions for agriculture. He also spoke about balancing his sporting commitments alongside his PhD and professional life,  a particularly inspiring message for pupils pursuing both sport and science.

He introduced pupils to Andermatt, the company he has worked with for over 20 years, where he has played a key role in creating pest control methods that increase crop yield without relying on chemical insecticides. Dr Neumann discussed specific examples of biological controls, including viruses designed to target the invasive Tuta absoluta moth, which affects tomato plants. These host-specific viruses are safe for beneficial organisms such as bees. He also explored the use of genetically modified bacteria and fungi as alternative pest control methods, sharing detailed diagrams and microscope images to illustrate his work.

The talk offered pupils a fascinating insight into a lesser-known career path in biology and broadened their understanding of the subject’s real-world applications. The Society extends its thanks to Dr Neumann for generously sharing his time and expertise.
