Academic Rigour and Core Focus
A strong academic foundation begins with a clear focus on core subjects. English, Mathematics, and the Sciences form the backbone of our curriculum, taught with rigour and pace by passionate subject specialists. From Year 7 through to Year 11, the sciences are taught as individual disciplines—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics—allowing pupils to develop a deep understanding of each area and to explore their specific interests in more depth.
Regular testing, detailed feedback, and personalised targets ensure that every pupil is supported to make meaningful progress and to reach their full academic potential.
A Recognised Thinking School
Mount Kelly is proud to be accredited as a Thinking School by the University of Exeter. This national recognition reflects our commitment to developing independent, reflective learners who can think critically and creatively. Pupils are explicitly taught how to think: how to question, connect ideas, solve problems, and evaluate different perspectives. These skills are embedded across all subjects and form a crucial part of our approach to teaching and learning.
Our Thinking School status helps us to nurture learners who are not only academically able but also emotionally intelligent, resilient, and articulate.
Enrichment Beyond the Curriculum
Academic excellence extends beyond the classroom walls. A rich programme of academic enrichment activities ensures that our pupils are challenged, inspired, and exposed to the wider world of ideas.
Opportunities include:
- Debating Society – where pupils sharpen their public speaking, critical thinking, and reasoning skills in friendly but competitive settings.
- Model United Nations – offering pupils the chance to step into the shoes of diplomats and engage with pressing global issues through research, negotiation, and collaboration.
- Plum Society – an invitation-only discussion group for our most academically curious pupils, providing a forum to explore ethical, philosophical, and political ideas beyond the curriculum.
- Biomedical Society – for aspiring medics, vets, dentists, and scientists, this society provides hands-on experience through advanced practical experiments and access to visiting professionals from a range of scientific and healthcare fields. Pupils receive targeted support and preparation for competitive university applications in the medical and life sciences.
Whether preparing for Oxbridge interviews or simply exploring a passion for knowledge, pupils are encouraged to take intellectual risks and to find joy in learning.
