Princess Yachts, one of Britain’s leading luxury boat builders, proved the ideal venue for a post-mocks Year 11 Business trip, as 24 pupils were given a rare behind-the-scenes insight into world-class manufacturing. The company produces a striking range of motor-powered yachts, from the 14-metre C Class right up to the impressive 29-metre tri-deck X Class, across five sites in and around Plymouth. Employing around 2,200 people and with 80 per cent of its yachts British-made, Princess Yachts is also the largest furniture manufacturer in England.
During the visit, yard manager Chris guided the group through the vast manufacturing sheds – more akin to aircraft hangars than traditional workshops – where pupils were able to witness the full breadth of modern manufacturing processes. These ranged from hand-crafted, job-production techniques to highly efficient steel-rail flow production lines, all contributing to the creation of beautiful luxury yachts for a global, multimillionaire clientele.
The pupils were also fortunate to hear from parent Adrian Bratt, a director at Princess Yachts, who outlined the company’s recent transformation and future ambitions. His talk offered valuable insight into career pathways within the industry and may even have persuaded some students to consider a Princess Yachts apprenticeship as a compelling alternative to a university degree.
It was a hugely rewarding and memorable day for all involved, and one the pupils will not forget, with sincere thanks to Adrian, Chris and the trip organiser, Jayne.
