Pupils from Years 3-8 at the Prep and Year 7 from the College were treated to a fun, dynamic and interactive French play by the Onatti Theatre Group.
Mount Kelly hosted nine teams from across Devon for its annual Under 18 Ten a side tournament.
A narrow 0-7 defeat to PETROC College was a disappointing start to the day, especially as we had a try disallowed in the last play of the game. Draws with TBGS and Shebbear in the final two group game meant that we qualified for the plate tournament.
Improved performances saw the Mount Kelly team defeat South Dartmoor 17-0 in the semi Final, and Trinity School 15-0 in the final to become plate champions.
The Mount Kelly Prep Year 7s and 8s performed “Dracula: The Final Countdown?”
Are you up for the mental challenge?!
The boys team won their Senior round at Callington and are now through to the District Finals
Year 5 pupils recently enjoyed an exciting trip to the Exeter Northcott Theatre to see the Theatre Alibi production of “I Believe in Unicorns”.
Mrs Buckley’s Year 4 class impressed audiences with their grasp of international culture across the two cultures at last Friday’s Assembly.
Inspired by sharing thoughts on customs and traditions with visiting Argentinian pupil Francisco Assalone the children helped develop a show which compares culture and day to day lifestyle practices in the two countries from taking tea, languages spoken, government, food and drink, and of course – sport!
Says Francisco of his time in the UK:
The best thing about England?
The beach at Polperro
What do you like the best about Mount Kelly?
All the teachers and my friends. 'I am going to miss the school – I want to come here!'
How does Tavistock compare with home?
“It's really hot in Argentina: about 40 degrees most days. Tavistock is far too cold!
Also Tavistock is also much bigger than Francisco's village Abril.”
Mrs Buckley says the class has been much enriched by the experience of knowing Francisco. The Argentinian is a big character, has a fabulous sense of humour. He settled into School life quickly, enjoying the opportunity to speak Spanish with Javier of course, and soon made lots of friends – we are all going to really miss him!!
The Inter-House Swimming Gala’s for Years 3 to 6 took place this week which saw pupils’ competing for their Houses. As the races got underway, the breadth and depth of School swimming talent it became very clear.
Some of our pupils’ compete in National competitions and this was their chance to shine in front of their peers. The Gala was not all about positions though and every pupil competed in at least one event for their house, whether they were a squad swimmer or still learning to swim, the atmosphere was fantastic, with everyone cheering the swimmers on. It was great to see so many children congratulating their fellow competitors at the end of their race, shaking their hand or giving them a pat on the back, their sportsmanship was excellent.
Thank you to all of the staff who helped the Galas run so smoothly on the day and to the parents who came along to support. Most of all, well done to all the swimmers who took part for displaying such a supportive attitude towards one another.
Congratulations to Hepworth who won the overall House competition for U9 and U11 Combined Galas.
The fifth of this season’s Mount Kelly Concert Society events featured Adelia Myslov a young Russian violinist, with Craig White on piano performing in the Melvin Hall this week.
Mrs Collier was delighted with the performance, commenting that it was a stunning evening of music; a lovely combination of Adelia’s virtuosic playing supported by a beautifully sensitive accompaniment from Craig. Benjamin Newbauer, Mount Kelly Lower Sixth pupil, was a fantastic page turner for Craig, undertaking what is a really nerve-wracking job. Particularly noteworthy was Adelia’s unaccompanied Bach ‘Partita’ which was utterly sublime.
It was pleasing to see a good number of Mount Kelly pupils in the audience, despite the fact that many younger pupils were unable to attend as they were at the Prep performance of ‘Dracula’ on the same evening.
As an enthusiastic audience confirmed, it was easy to see why the duo were invited for a repeat performance following last year’s equally impressive appearance.
Don’t miss the next MK Concert: The Sterling Trio on Wednesday 18th March at 7:45pm, Melvin Hall (College); tickets available on the door at £13 (adult); £11 (concessions) / accompanied children go free. (This is a superb price for a professional standard concert!)
