The Sound of Maths

Posted: 9th March 2017

Year 9 pupils spent their maths lesson investigating the exponential relationship between the volume of water in a bottle, and the frequency of the note produced when blowing over the neck of the bottle. They collected frequency readings and discovered that adding more water resulted in the shortening of wavelengths, therefore increasing the frequency (making a higher note). Pupils realised that they can produce a range of notes by using the same type of bottle and varying the amount of water inside it, leading to some great performances of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'!
