Our Country’s Good

Posted: 9th December 2022

We were transported back to 1788 upon a convict ship bound for Australia this week, within the latest College production Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker.

The harsh yet atmospheric setting, with stark lighting and the sounds of Kookaburras and didgeridoos, soon showed that we had arrived on land, faced with a confused Aborigine. The factual stories of the different individuals who were forming the first colony were then told with a fierceness and tenderness that gripped the audience.

Dealing with issues like punishment and retribution, the transformative power of the theatre and the slow disintegration of the natives’ culture proved to be really moving and thought-provoking for the cast, who really rose to the challenge of the complexities of the production.
