Animals and Adventures

The first stop on Year 5’s LOTC trip was Newquay Zoo where pupils listened to an informative talk by the zoo’s education officer about animal skeletons and how each has adapted for their specific needs. The children created short films in groups about their favourite animal at the zoo, with topics ranging from sloths to capybaras.

On arrival at Poly Joke campsite later in the day – for the first night under canvas for some – the challenge was to set up the tents without any guidance from staff. Pupils showed great determination in soaring heat and the tents were up in less than 45 minutes. After a very welcome dinner and doughnuts, pupils watched the sunset from the beach, spotting two basking sharks off the headland.

It was an early start the following day, with the children body boarding or surfing by 09:30. The weather was perfect – what a way to spend the first Friday of the new school year!

A visit to the RNLI station followed, to learn about rip tides, flags, beach safety and recent rescues.

Some very tired children returned to the Prep, with their heads full of animals, adventures and new friendships made.
