Twenty-four pupils from Year 9 to 12, representing all three distances of 35, 45 and 55 Miles, ventured out onto the moor for their first Ten Tors training walk of the year.
The emphasis was on developing and practising navigational skills and small groups of pupils explored the area around Meldon Reservoir and Yes Tor. Amongst the skills being developed were: learning how to read the map accurately and relating the map to the ground; how to take compass bearings and walk on a bearing; contouring around a hill; and how to pick a route across challenging terrain on the ground.
Although they were blessed with some lovely autumnal sunshine and clear visibility, the wind chill on the tops of the tors reminded pupils how the moor should not be taken lightly.
