Rugby Masterclass

Posted: 18th March 2024

Mount Kelly’s rugby team was delighted to welcome former captain of the England Rugby 7s, Greg Barden, for a masterclass on Saturday to help them prepare for this week’s Rosslyn Park 7s tournament.

Greg Barden, with his fascinating life story and impressive background, captivated our boys from the moment he stepped onto the field. At the age of just 16, Greg made the bold decision to join the Marines, setting the stage for a remarkable journey ahead. His determination and passion led him to become the youngest person to complete the UK’s Special Forces selection and join the prestigious Special Boat Service (SBS). Greg then transitioned into the world of professional rugby, where he captained the England rugby 7s team.

During the masterclass, Greg seamlessly merged his military fitness training with rugby 7s skills, creating a unique and challenging experience for our first team boys. The session pushed their physical and mental limits, instilling discipline, teamwork, and resilience – qualities that are essential not only in rugby, but also in life.

Following an intense training session, Greg joined our boys for a dinner in the boardroom, providing an opportunity for a Q&A session. The boys were enthralled as Greg shared stories from his time as a Marine to his successful career as a professional rugby player; a testament to the power of determination, perseverance, and passion.

As an entrepreneur, Greg continues to thrive, using the lessons learnt from his diverse experiences to build a successful business. His ability to adapt, overcome challenges, and excel in different fields is truly inspiring.

Greg Barden’s visit was a transformative experience for our first team rugby boys. They not only gained valuable insights and skills in rugby 7s, but they also learnt important life lessons from a true role model. Greg’s story serves as a reminder that with dedication, hard work, and a never-give-up attitude, anything is possible.

We are grateful to Greg Barden for his time, expertise, and inspirational presence. His visit has left an indelible mark on our team, motivating them to push their limits and strive for greatness. We eagerly look forward to seeing our boys in action at the upcoming Rosslyn Park 7s, equipped with the skills and mindset instilled by Greg.
