GO4SET Launch 2015

10th February 2015

Plymouth Aquarium was once again the venue for the GO4SET launch, where Mount Kelly is fielding two teams of 6.

The scheme is aimed at introducing year 9 students to the world of engineering, where a challenge is set and each team has to present their solutions, build a model, make a display and compile a report over the following ten weeks.

Mount Kelly is no stranger to the scheme and has entered teams for the past 5 years, winning on two occasions.

Our teams will be working with mentors from Babcock Marine to design a sports centre that is ecologically friendly. The launch day was a great success and a chance to select the two teams, meet the mentors as well as take part in some team building challenges against other schools.

In the following weeks the teams will be working closely with Engineers from the company as well as enjoying a site visit to the dockyard to see Engineering in practice. The scheme will culminate after Easter with the Celebration Day at Plymouth University.

Devon County Championships

10th February 2015

Mount Kelly Swimming concluded the Devon County Championships with a dominant weekend at the Plymouth Life Centre, with six Open Mount Kelly Records being broken. These long-standing records were broken by Julian Chan Quee Lin (2), Benjamin Staig (2), Megan Bowen and Donovan McAntagart.

Over the course of the County Championships, Mount Kelly Swimming claimed 13 Championships Titles including both the Male and Female 50m SKINS events where Julian Chan Quee Lin and Megan Bowen both took victory. Other championship winners included Harry Hathaway, Donovan McAntagart, Leah Picillo and Chloe Barrow. Mount Kelly Swimming also had five Junior Champions, underlining the younger talent we currently have in our programme. These winners were Lauren Hession, Oliver Taverner, Connor Sleeman, Jacob Gibbons and Taku Chaza.

In the Age Group finals, Mount Kelly Swimming booked a massive total of 102 final places, claiming 92 medals (38 Golds, 30 Silvers and 24 Bronzes). This competition was another impressive outing for Mount Kelly Swimming. The swimmers will now build into their training over the coming weeks in preparation for the Sheffield Premier Open Meet and 2015 British Championships in the next few months.

BBC Bitesize Trialed at Mount Kelly

6th February 2015

Our year 9 and 10 Mount Kelly French pupils had the incredible privilege to be chosen to pilot the new BBC Bitesize programme, before it goes on the Internet next year.

Two executives from The BBC Two Four Production came last Wednesday and tried the new resources and French Bitesize programme with our very excited language pupils, showing them 11 short films built around the different topic areas for the new GCSE, and then had a very interesting question and answer session to get their feedback.

What came out of the session was that learning languages is not just about memorising vocabulary and grammar. Lessons today are supplemented with movies, songs and Internet, which makes it more fun to learn a language.

We also came to the conclusion that the hardest part of language learning is remembering complicated grammar rules. The internet, short clips with themes young people can relate to and songs help to reinforce the rules, once you find the patterns in the spoken words and lyrics.

Mrs Brown, Mrs Bott, Mrs Morel and all the pupils felt that the content was a brilliant preparation for the forthcoming French Controlled Assessments and we will all be using the new BBC Bitesize resource as soon as it is live on the Internet.

“Merci” to Mr Hugh Walkington, for all your wonderful input and valued points of view.

Year 8 Assembly: Opportunities and Talents

6th February 2015

The Prep was impressed with the Year 8 Assembly performance last week.  Each Year 8 discussed and demonstrated particular opportunities and talents that they had identified and developed during their time at Mount Kelly – from music to sport to drama or the School Farm!

Two examples:

My Time at the School

I came when I was three,

As tall as Mrs MacDougall’s knee.

Scary at first

But what was worse

There was no one I knew I could see.

Met Jessye and Betty my first day

We played, had lunch and chatted away

Numbers and letters filled our heads

They were still there when I went to bed

Little did I know they were there to stay.

The years passed quickly I barely knew

Time didn’t stand still, it flew

The matches, the concerts, and the plays we performed

The memories are here in my heart all warm

Who knew they would stay always true.

My last year is now and I’ll take a bow

And say thank you to all who knew how

To teach me, guide me and help me along

Though time together is almost gone

I’ve had such fun. This is all for now.

The School Farm

I have been at Mount House, now Mount Kelly for 5 years. My two brothers were Mount House boys before me. This School has given me great opportunities; one of the best is the Farm.  I enjoy feeding the animals in the morning and being able to keep my own animals here like this rabbit Sampson who is an orange Rex Buck. Luckily for the school I don’t bring all my animals to school as this is a list of all the animals I own:  8 rabbits, 2 ferrets 1 sheepdog, 100 sheep, 10 cows, 50 chickens, 3 ducks, 15 Quails

This School has also taught me to do the sound effects for the senior plays two years running. I am really looking forward to the last term and a half of this wonderful school and I know I will miss it hugely.
