Myths, Legends and Mud

Year 6 pupils stayed at Dewerstone Cottage for their LOTC last week: a super location with bunk beds – and showers!

Their courage and resilience were immediately put to the test by abseiling down The Dewerstone on Thursday and plunging down the river on a gorge walk.

On Friday, the children visited Dartmoor Visitor Centre in Princetown to investigate the myths and legends that feature on Dartmoor – The Hairy Hand, Greyweathers and the Legend of Vixen Tor – not to mention the infamous Hounds of the Baskerville.

After a pasty lunch it was back to the cottage to collect bracken, lichen and leaves to decorate masks and hand templates as Vixana or the Hairy Hand. Story writing followed and the children shared their own myths and legends around the fire at dusk.

On Saturday morning, the children were up early for the much-anticipated bog run and leap of faith into Gold Digger’s quarry.

A magnificent and challenging time was had by all.
