World Book Day 2024

Posted: 7th March 2024

Children at the Prep rose to the challenge of dressing up as a favourite book character for World Book Day on Thursday 7 March. They have taken part in various activities, including masked readers, a National Literacy Trust Bookie Footy Quiz, and a ‘book cover’ door decorating competition. Pupils also enjoyed a themed lunch and a visit to Book Stop’s pop-up shop at the Prep.

Pre-Prep pupils have immersed themselves in an array of activities to celebrate books and reading every day this week. These included a speed read where Mrs Salisbury rang the school bell every five minutes for the teachers to swap rooms to read a favourite story to the Pre-Prep classes, a book review on a ‘mystery book’ which was wrapped in newspaper, and bringing in a book to swap at the Book Swap Shop. The children also enjoyed the opportunity of wearing their pyjamas to school on Thursday.

At the beginning of the week, the Pre-Prep welcomed Holly Ryan, author of Never Mess with a Pirate Princess. Holly helped the children to imagine their own adventure story by drawing their ideas on the board as they told the story, and the children relished the opportunity to draw the main character. On Tuesday, artist, Maria Floyd, visited to show Pre-Prep pupils some of the books she has illustrated and the different media she uses. Pupils were inspired by her illustrations of Gus and created some dogs of their own.

At the College, pupils have celebrated World Book Day, Mothers’ Day and International Women’s Day by looking at the theme of Mothers in literature. Our EAL pupils created presentations about female authors from Germany, Austria, Lithuania, Poland, Brazil, Ukraine, Hong Kong and China, and how Mother’s Day is celebrated in their country. Ms Whittleworth and Mr Dixon started the week with a thoughtful reflection on mothering, significant women and the bible in chapel on Monday. On Friday, they welcomed Rachel Trethewey, author of Mothers of the Mind, for a fascinating seminar on the mothers of Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf and Agatha Christie.
