Earth Day 2024

Posted: 23rd April 2024

Pupils across Mount Kelly celebrated Earth Day on Monday by wearing green or recycled clothes bought from local charity shops. Many of the day’s lessons took place without electricity or computer technology and teachers took the opportunity to teach outside and get a nature fix.

Upper Prep pupils explored the height of Mount Kelly’s trees with a clinometer and modelled them as a cylinder to estimate their volume. Using an approximate density of 500kg/m3 pupils attempted to assign a mass to the trees and calculate how much was likely to be carbon. From this they were able to consider how much carbon dioxide was sequestrated from the atmosphere over the tree’s life to date, making links to carbon reduction and global warming.
