Beyond the Curriculum

At Mount Kelly, we are passionate about offering innovative, flexible ways to help pupils shape their futures with confidence. Beyond formal A Level or BTEC courses, our Beyond the Curriculum programme equips pupils with essential life skills and introduces them to the wider world they will soon be navigating, preparing them not just for exams, but for life.

The programme is built around four dynamic elements

Part A: Public Speaking and Personal Presentation

Year 12 pupils receive expert training in public speaking through LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). For the first ten weeks of Michaelmas Term, they attend one lesson per week focused on mastering the art of confident communication, with the option to sit a formal LAMDA exam. Following this, workshops sharpen personal presentation, social skills, and professional etiquette, vital tools for any career path. Pupils can continue LAMDA training afterward on a rechargeable basis.

Part B: Higher Level Learning Skills

In the first half of Michaelmas Term, Year 12 pupils complete two targeted sessions in Study Skills designed to boost academic success and ease their transition into A Level and BTEC study. Led by EPQ tutors, topics include:

  • Introduction to the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
  • Effective research strategies
  • Referencing, bibliographies, and avoiding plagiarism
  • Note-taking methods
  • Academic organisation
  • Leveraging IT and digital tools for presentations
  • Designing and using questionnaires
  • Reflective practice and self-improvement
  • Revision techniques

Part C: Guidance and UCAS Support

From Lent Term onwards, all Year 12 pupils receive weekly lessons with the Head of Guidance, continuing into Year 13. This personalised support covers:

  • Interview skills and personal presentation
  • Alternatives to university and routes into employment
  • Writing CVs and covering letters
  • Apprenticeships
  • Career research via Unifrog
  • UCAS application process and personal statements
  • Global university applications including the USA and Hong Kong

Alongside these lessons, a programme of talks, visits, and careers fairs provides real-world insight and opportunities.

Part D: General Studies

Pupils participate in a rotating series of short courses that build on earlier PSHE learning, focusing on debate and critical thinking. This element encourages pupils to explore and articulate their own opinions, preparing them to engage thoughtfully with society.
