Dyslexia Awareness Month

Dyslexia Awareness: Changing the world

It’s Dyslexia Awareness month and with 10% of the population now dyslexic (British Dyslexia Association, 2023) it is being seen as one of the world’s most valuable skills. People with dyslexia have created everything from great art and lightbulbs, to the iPhone and the telephone.

At Mount Kelly we use Quality First Teaching (a focus on high quality and inclusiveness) to provide the best possible care, understanding and provision to all our dyslexic pupils. Eight strategies our teachers use to support pupils in the classroom include:

1 Chunking instructions

2 Checking understanding by asking pupils to repeat back instructions

3 Having key vocabulary visible

4 Having key information or handouts

5 Encouraging different ways of recording information

6 Providing writing frames

7 Allowing time to process information

8 Focusing on key words

As part of our ongoing professional development programme teachers have also signed up to Dyslexia training on the Nessy phonics programme. But everyone can get involved.

Apple Podcast subscribers may like to listen to ‘Lessons In Dyslexic Thinking‘ – fascinating and inspiring conversations with the world’s most inspiring dyslexics,  from spies and sports stars, to explorers and entrepreneurs.

A short training course for parents can be found here and an inspiring video for pupils can be found  here.

If the next Richard Branson is amongst us, we’re all ready.
