Completion of TASS Mural

Our pupil volunteers have finished the mural at the Tavistock Area Support Services cafe. Sixth Form pupils Brydan and Lottie have done a fantastic job of leading the project, supported by Year 10 charity committee volunteers, and have shared their thoughts on the project:

Lottie – The most challenging aspect for me was the incorporation of many elements in one image. Iconic Tavistock landmarks , the river, moor and market. We wanted a colourful and cohesive composition; I think we achieved that. I really enjoyed painting on Saturday mornings with Brydan, continuing the work of the Year 10 pupils.

Brydan – ‘It was really fun to be a part of this. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to paint on a large scale and the challenge of working on a wall in front of the public. It was tricky to incorporate everything that was suggested but ultimately feedback was positive throughout. I have been asked to help with additional window dressing in town as a result of this experience.’

Jessica – ‘The hardest part was painting on such a bumpy wall. We all enjoyed talking to the cafe visitors, drinking hot chocolate and learning about people’s connections with Tavistock.’

Amalie – ‘We were lucky to meet some of the regulars who were always complimentary. We met an inquisitive group of ex dockyard workers who stopped on their walk for tea and who took time to talk to us before joining in with a group photograph in front of the mural.’

Isabel – ‘It’s very fulfilling to help out in a project for a good cause, like the TASS Community cafe. The completed mural is a nice addition and I hope it will make people’s day.’

Evie – ‘I enjoyed working on the Mural once a week with others in the volunteer and charity committee group.’

Proud teacher and Subject Lead Art and Photography (College), Netty Holwill, added, ‘It was a wonderful opportunity to seal a permanent connection with TASS and Tavistock town centre in general. Holly Stirling, manager of TASS has been immensely supportive in creating a healthy link with us at Mount Kelly. Our art work already appears on the hoarding boards in Brook Street and it is my hope that people will see more of the creative talent nurtured here, in future projects.’
