Pre-Prep children have enjoyed an awe-inspiring Science Week, making many exciting discoveries and learning new skills.
On Tuesday, the children were spellbound by the magical happenings in the College chemistry laboratory. Finding rainbows in sweets, making lava lamps and inflating hands certainly inspired a new generation of budding scientists. Pre-Prep pupils visited the Prep science lab on Wednesday where Mr Buckley showed them how to turn blue water clear through a condenser and shake it to turn it blue again. They also discovered how different liquids mix together with Ms Sheridan, observing the movement of glycerine, ink and oil in water, and adding water to make patterns with skittles.
Pupils carried out a pressure experiment in which they were asked to predict what would happen to an inflated balloon inside a bell jar when an air compressor was switched on. After the surprising results were discussed, the children were given a giant marshmallow and an edible pen. They drew a face on their marshmallow and had to guess what would happen to their marshmallow person!
In Reception class, they have been engineers and built bridges, making them stable enough to cross the river and have space underneath for a boat to pass through. Pupils worked in teams, making adaptations and showing perseverance when a bridge collapsed.
In Year 2, a real highlight of the week was a Freeze It trip to The Dartmoor Ice Cream Company in Princetown. A very excited group of Year 2 pupils carefully weighed their chosen ice cream ingredients before leaving, and on arrival, were treated to an interactive lesson about how to make ice cream. They also admired the beautiful artwork created for the labelling and created their own limited-edition tub of ice cream to bring back to school to eat.
