We were once again thrilled to welcome One Day Film School to Mount Kelly on Friday 22 November. Along with some more senior Drama pupils, our Year 9 pupils were immersed into the world of film, exploring different genre and the many different technical aspects of story telling on screen. Pupils had the opportunity to learn from a professional actor and cameraman, and then were able to create, film and edit their own films. They learnt a huge amount about how media is able to manipulate, communicate, inform and entertain. The day ended with an Oscars Ceremony where the pupils’ work was showcased and celebrated. The creativity that was displayed was excellent and the pupils collaborated brilliantly.
The day’s programme included:
- Film History: from the early days of film to the latest in special effects
- Fight Choreography: analysing classic fight scenes then filming their own roundhouse punch
- Camera: learning to film like a pro, and tips and tricks to avoid common mistakes
- Screenwriting: learning the 3 things every good script needs, how to create memorable characters (and make us care)
Then is was time for the 10 Shot Challenge: pupils worked in groups to create silent (with music) films of up to 2 minutes based on a classic narrative. This was followed by the Oscars: the judges (Young Film Academy representatives) took their seats for the world premiere of pupils’ films, and to decide who would win Best Motion Picture, Best Performance and Best Technical Achievement.
