DW Santa Sprints

This term, our Devizes to Westminster paddlers have spent Friday afternoons and several Sundays training for the race next Easter.

They have worked through numerous paddling and portaging drills, sprint and distance time trials and cold-water self-rescue. The training journey has presented a significant learning curve for all involved, however, the pupils have consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience, determination, and a positive attitude. With 14 dedicated paddlers still actively training, we have a strong and promising squad aiming to conquer Westminster Bridge in April 2025. Several pairs are already exhibiting a competitive racing mindset and demonstrating significant potential.

Crews ended the Michaelmas term with our traditional Santa Sprint race on one of the training loops on the Exeter Canal. It was a tough race which saw the iconic Santa Claus fall at the first hurdle – taking an unexpected dip into the canal. Thing 1 and Thing 2 went round in circles due to rudder issues, however a pair of determined elves emerged victorious, showcasing their skill and perseverance. More importantly all crews did exceptional well to avoid being sunk by the Exmouth Ferry as it steamed down the canal!
