Prep pupils have been busy painting Remembrance poppies as part of a community poppy project in Princetown.
Local villagers, craft groups and the Women’s Institute have been knitting, crocheting and carving poppies for a year and their success has seen hand-made poppy donations posted to them from across the UK and abroad.
The Mount Kelly poppies have been painted onto round pieces of wood which look like cross sections of trees. Jo Tribe, art lead at Mount Kelly Prep explained, “We are involving every pupil at Mount Kelly Prep in the painting of a wooden poppy, so they can create a field where every flower is as unique as they are.
“By taking the time to create a personal poppy the pupils are also learning about its significance in representing lives lost on active service and giving them an outlet to show their support for the sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families.”
India in Year 8 at Mount Kelly said, “Our poppies show that we care about people and peace in the world. I am also pleased that our Mount Kelly poppies are made of wood and not plastic, which is better for the planet.”
Princetown has a high percentage of former and serving service personnel, with links to the Army and Navy in particular. The poppies will be hung on the gates of Princetown United Church on Sunday 12 November ready for a procession from the church, and a service at the war memorial on the green.
