Model UN 2024

Somalia Committee

Twelve Mount Kelly Sixth Form pupils participated in the Oxford Global Model UN at the University of Oxford at the weekend. They represented a diverse range of countries, advocating for solutions to some of the biggest global challenges across several important committees, including the World Health Organization, European Court of Human Rights, the IOC (looking at doping and fair practice in Sport), the ECONFIN Economic and Finance Committee (advocating for a minimum global corporate tax rate) and the COP 30 climate change conference. Alex and Signe also took part in the midnight committee at Trinity College for the first time.

All pupils participated well in committee debates and resolutions, and their hard work paid off with four pupils recognised at the closing ceremony:

  • Alex and Edward received honorable mentions for their work on the Special Political and Decolonization Committee
  • Signe received an honorable mention for her work representing the Solomon Islands in the COP30 Climate Summit
  • Alfred received the Outstanding Delegate Award for his work to advocate for a new democratic government in Somalia after the civil war

Well done to all involved.
