This week, the Biomedical Society welcomed Consultant Cardiologist Dr David Sarkar, who delivered an insightful and interactive session on cutting-edge cardiovascular technology.
During a live demonstration, Dr Sarkar showed pupils how mechanical stents are deployed and introduced the innovative concept of biological stents that dissolve within the artery. He explained the role of TAVI valves in maintaining proper blood flow and highlighted the minimally invasive techniques used for valve implantation, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery.
Dr Sarkar also explored how pacemakers regulate heart rhythm through electrical signals, showcasing the differences between various models. To illustrate the power of echocardiography, he performed an echo on himself—allowing pupils to see the real-time functioning of his own heart.
Beyond the technology, Dr Sarkar shared his personal journey into medicine, his decision to specialise in cardiology and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in reducing cardiovascular risk.
