Mount Kelly Hosts Head Injuries Talk

Mount Kelly recently welcomed journalist and author Sam Peters for a compelling and thought‑provoking talk on concussion in modern sport. In a chat‑show style conversation, expertly hosted by the Head Master, Sam shared insights from his award‑winning book Concussed and spoke candidly about his personal journey investigating the long‑term impact of head injuries.

Throughout the discussion, Sam blended striking real‑world stories with emerging scientific evidence, highlighting the increasing understanding of the links between contact sports and brain health. His message reinforced the importance of informed practice, early recognition, and robust support for athletes at every level.

Following the event, Sam remarked:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Mount Kelly and was encouraged once again to experience a school which so clearly understands the value of protecting participants in sport, in order to protect the sport itself.”

At Mount Kelly, pupil welfare remains the highest priority. The School uses the Return to Play Head Injury & Concussion Care system, enabling staff to track injuries, communicate clearly with parents and coaches, and closely monitor each pupil’s recovery. Contact training is intentionally kept to a minimum across the rugby programme, with widespread use of tag rugby to promote skill development while reducing head‑impact exposure. In addition, coaches place a strong emphasis on teaching correct tackle technique, ensuring pupils develop safe and effective habits from the outset. Sam’s visit served as a timely reminder of the importance of ongoing awareness and best practice in safeguarding young athletes.
