Our cadets enjoyed an exceptionally enriching and memorable visit to BRNC Dartmouth, with a full programme that offered challenge, adventure and a real insight into naval life.
The visit began on Friday evening with supper in the historic Gun Room, after which the cadets took part in an exciting session of team Combat Archery — an excellent opportunity to build teamwork and have fun together.
Saturday started early with a guided tour of the college, including the Captain’s House, where the cadets were delighted to meet the Captain’s dog. The group then divided between the high ropes course and archery, both of which were approached with enthusiasm and confidence. After lunch, the cadets walked down to Sandquay and headed out on the River Dart in a Zodiac. Many had the chance to helm the boat, and the group enjoyed a short stop for an ice cream before returning to shore.
In the afternoon, the cadets completed the Royal Navy swim test in the college pool, swimming two lengths and exiting the water while wearing overalls. Several succeeded in this challenging assessment, demonstrating real determination. The day concluded with a relaxed evening walk around Dartmouth.
Sunday began with breakfast in the Gun Room before the cadets observed Colours on the main parade square. Our senior cadets then had the privilege of leading the marching around the front of the college. This was followed by chapel, where the group enjoyed a lively and uplifting service.
Afterwards, the cadets met with current trainees and the Captain of the College for tea and biscuits. Several trainees spoke about their own experiences of joining BRNC, and the Question & Answer session that followed was both engaging and informative. The cadets then took part in an impressive session on the bridge simulator before heading to lunch.
Although the final activity on the bouldering wall had to be cancelled, the cadets ended the visit by tidying their rooms and preparing for the return journey home.
Overall, the weekend was a tremendous success. The cadets represented themselves and the school admirably, embracing every activity with enthusiasm and showing real maturity throughout. It was a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all involved, and one that has undoubtedly strengthened their skills, confidence and teamwork.
