Year 12 A Level Psychology pupils recently attended an engaging and informative enrichment day at the University of Plymouth. The visit provided valuable insight into university-level study, key psychological topics and potential career pathways within the field.

The day began with a welcome session, introducing pupils to the university and outlining the programme ahead. This was followed by a series of academic taster sessions designed to extend pupils’ understanding beyond the A Level specification.

The first session focused on psychopathology, exploring different approaches to understanding mental health disorders. Pupils then attended an interactive talk titled Free Will and Determinism: How Magicians Influence Your Thoughts and Behaviours, which examined how perception, decision-making and illusion can be manipulated, bringing complex theoretical debates to life in an engaging and memorable way.

Later in the morning, pupils participated in a biopsychology session, gaining further insight into brain function and the biological processes underpinning behaviour. This reinforced topics studied in class while also introducing more advanced concepts.

Following lunch, the afternoon programme included a hands-on research methods workshop, where pupils designed and engaged in psychological investigations. The practical session helped develop skills essential for both A Level success and future study.

Pupils also enjoyed a guided campus tour, offering a valuable first-hand experience of university facilities and pupil life. The day concluded with a session titled Becoming a Psychologist, which explored career pathways, the UCAS application process and advice on writing effective personal statements.

The visit was highly beneficial, allowing pupils to deepen their subject knowledge, experience university-style teaching and gain inspiration for their future studies and careers. Overall, it was a stimulating and rewarding day that further motivated pupils as they continue their A Level Psychology course.
