An Unforgettable Tall Ships Experience

Several of our pupils recently took part in an unforgettable Tall Ships voyage from Portsmouth as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, gaining invaluable experience as members of the working crew aboard Challenger.

Over five days, they developed practical sailing skills including steering, sail handling, ropework and watchkeeping, while also strengthening their teamwork, resilience and problem-solving abilities. Highlights for the crew included a memorable 3 am night sail followed by a spectacular sunrise, as well as the opportunity to swim off the coast in excellent weather.

Pupils spoke highly of Captain Sam and Skipper Sophie, whose encouragement, expertise and enthusiasm helped make the voyage such a rewarding experience.

For many, the voyage was both challenging and transformative. Living and working closely with others reinforced the importance of communication, trust and adaptability, while providing a unique opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and develop greater confidence and independence. The experience has left a lasting impression, both in terms of practical skills and personal growth.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mike Reeves and the Conway Merchant Navy Trust for their generous sponsorship in making these opportunities possible. With more pupils set to sail over the summer, we look forward to hearing their own stories of adventure, challenge and discovery.
