Biomedical Society Visits Derriford Hospital Laboratories

On the morning of Friday 19th June, five Year 12 pupils from the school’s Biomedical Society were fortunate to visit the haematology and combined laboratories at Derriford Hospital, where a wide range of medical tests are carried out each day.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the pupils were welcomed by Harvey Ransome, a Biomedical Scientist specialising in Blood Sciences, who led them on a fascinating tour of the laboratories.

After putting on their white lab coats, the group began their tour at the very start of a blood or urine sample’s journey through the laboratory. They learned how samples are received, labelled and processed according to the tests required. Samples are then loaded onto an automated conveyor belt system and centrifuged, while urgent samples are manually prioritised before being directed to the appropriate testing equipment.

The pupils were introduced to the laboratory’s impressive range of specialist equipment, including large analysers containing different reagents for a variety of diagnostic tests. They also learned about techniques such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and ELISA testing. During this part of the visit, biochemist Sally explained the purpose of the different tests, how the equipment operates and the rigorous quality assurance procedures that ensure accurate and reliable results. A short break in the staff room provided a welcome opportunity to reflect on everything they had seen so far.

The tour then continued into the haematology laboratory, where the pupils discovered how blood samples are analysed to identify potential health conditions. They observed the preparation of samples for analysis and had the opportunity to use a two-person microscope, allowing them to examine blood samples up close.

The final stop was the laboratory’s refrigerated storage area, where archived samples are carefully stored. The cooler environment provided a noticeable contrast to the warmth of the busy laboratories, filled with hardworking staff and sophisticated equipment.

At the end of the visit, the pupils returned their lab coats, washed their hands and were delighted to receive a goodie bag to take home.

The pupils would like to extend their sincere thanks to Mr Whitehead, Harvey Ransome, Sally and all the staff at Derriford Hospital for providing such an inspiring and informative experience. The visit offered a unique insight into biomedical science and highlighted the incredible work taking place right on their doorstep.
